  • While we are not baby feeding experts, we found these tips and tricks helpful!

.) Watch for Readiness Signs: Start introducing solids when your baby shows signs of readiness, typically around 6 months. These signs include being able to sit up with little or no support, showing interest in your food, and the ability to swallow food rather than push it out with their tongue.

.) Begin with Single-Ingredient Foods: Start with single-ingredient purees or very soft foods. Common first foods include pureed fruits and vegetables or single-grain cereals mixed with breast milk, formula, or water. Wait 3-5 days between introducing new foods to watch for any allergic reactions.

.) Embrace Messy Eating: Feeding solids will be messy. Let your baby explore textures and tastes, even if it means food gets everywhere. This exploration is crucial for their development.

.) Follow Baby's Cues: Pay attention to your baby's hunger and fullness cues. Let them guide how much they want to eat. Forcing food can lead to negative associations with eating.

.) Introduce a Variety of Foods: By 9-12 months, aim to introduce a wide variety of flavors and textures. This helps ensure they get a range of nutrients and can help prevent picky eating later on.

.) Practice Patience: Some babies take to solids right away, while others need more time. Be patient and keep offering a variety of foods without pressuring them.

.) Safe Eating Environment: Always supervise your baby while they eat to ensure safety. Make sure they are seated in an upright position in a high chair or similar setup.

.) Incorporate Iron-Rich Foods: Babies need iron for growth and development, especially around 6 months. Include iron-rich foods like pureed meats, beans, and iron-fortified cereals.

.) Stay Hydrated: Offer small amounts of water in a cup during meal times to get them used to drinking from a cup and to keep them hydrated.

.) Enjoy the Journey: Introducing solids is a journey with ups and downs. Enjoy the process of discovering your baby’s likes and dislikes and watching them grow and develop.

Remember, every baby is different, so what works for one may not work for another. Consult with your pediatrician if you have concerns about allergies, feeding difficulties, or your baby's growth and nutrition.
